Conference Keynote: Higher Ed Research

The Client

Longmire and Co are an independent US agency specializing in research and counselling in the field of higher education. The services that they offer include on-campus training workshops, yield enhancement programs, student surveys, quality measurement programs, customized research, and more. Their clients range from the largest public universities to the smallest privates.

Purpose

This presentation is intended to advertise and promote Longmire and Co’s services at numerous higher ed conferences around the US during the upcoming months including the two largest and most prestigious networking events in the industry. It would be carried out by different members of the team so there needed to be a way to quickly change the speakers slide. For that reason several slide templates were provided to cover any possible variation of head count and content.

Highlights

This slide show is a complete overhaul of the original document, compiled by the client. Since this 62 slide presentation is so rich on data it was a great opportunity to explore several custom visual components:

  • Word clouds - A visual representation of text that is rarely used nowadays. Since this presentation is based on the results of a text-heavy survey with over 13000 participants word clouds were the perfect candidate for laying out answers in an easy to consume manner.
  • Butterfly bar charts - Most of the quantitative information in this document had been recorded for both public and private schools. A butterfly chart is one of the best approaches when we need to oppose two series of data to one another.
  • Custom pie charts - Stripped away from any extra elements and decorated with stylish custom labeling.
  • Custom bar charts - Bar charts with heavily customized labels. Just like the butterfly charts achieving this effect takes a bit of extra math in the Excel spread sheet but the end results are totally worth it.
